2011 diocesan convention

The following is The Rt. Rev. Nedi Rivera convention address at the 41st Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon, held Oct. 14-16 in Hermiston;

Seek Ye First
O God, by your Holy Spirit you moved Teresa of Avila to manifest to your Church the way of perfection: Grant us, we pray, to be nourished by her excellent teaching, and enkindle within us a keen and unquenchable longing for true holiness; through Jesus Christ, the joy of loving hearts, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

At the 41st Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon, delegates:

  • Elected the Rev. Jim Mosier, St Matthew's, Ontario, and Julie Sarazin, St. Paul's, Nyssa, to terms on Standing Committee;
  • Elected the Rev. Rich Landrith, St. Luke's, Lakeview; Kim McClain, Trinity, Bend, and Don Dickinson, St. Paul's, The Dalles, to to three-year terms on Diocesan Council. Sue Powers, St. Mark's, Madras, was elected to serve the one year term on council resulting from the resignation of Bob Thomson, St. Mark's, Hood River.
  • Passed a resolution directing "our Bishop, Standing Committee and Diocesan Council to continue our efforts --to remain the Diocese of Eastern Oregon (and) to have a Bishop." The resolution also charges the Diocesan Council "with the responsibility to identify and develop financial resources to sustain this future vision."

  • Passed a resolution recommending that "The Episcopal Church respectfully decline to ratify The Anglican Communion Covenant as proposed." Presented by the Rev. James Mosier and the Rev. Kathryn Macek, the resolution said in part that "After prayerful consideration of The Anglican Communion Covenant, the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon, in Province VIII of The Episcopal Church, believes that the Covenant does not further the reign of God; and ...that Section Four in particular--by its adjudicatory nature--introduces an adversarial element that could wound the Communion."

  • On Sunday witnessed the ordination to the priesthood of Kathryn Macek, interim at St. Peter's, La Grande.
  • Adopted a $472,442 diocesan budget for 2012, which cuts the parish assessment from 25 percent to 22.5 percent.
